This circuit will enable one to simulate the "computer voice" effect commonly heard in films, ads, and TV programs. It consists of two sections: an oscillator to provide the modulation signals, and the modulator itself. The oscillator uses a 555 timer chip in the astable multivibrator mode, and the frequency of operation has been set at about 10 Hz by the values given to R1, R2, and C1. A very simple modulator is used, but this is quite acceptable. Distortion produces new frequencies that help to change the voice signal and make it sound less like the original. A large amount of distortion is obviously not desirable because it would severely impair the intelligibility of the output signal. Transistor TR1 is used as a sort of voltage-controlled resistor, and, in conjunction with R4, it forms a voltage-controUed attenuator.
